Here is a private tour where you can enjoy the highlights of Tokyo with peace of mind even for wheelchair users. In Tokyo, the barrier-free environment is rapidly improving ahead of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games scheduled to be held in 2020. ① Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center and Sensoji Temple (10:15-11:10)
This tour starts at your hotel and first visits Asakusa. In Asakusa, you can enjoy the views of the area and also the Tokyo Skytree from the observation deck of Asakusa Culture Tourist Infromation Center, and then take a walk through Kaminarimon, Nakamise, Asakusa and Asakusa shrines, which are icons of Tokyo tourism.

Sensoji.jpgAt Sensoji Temple, you can also enjoy a huge ceiling painting –a highlight of the main hall – because the main hall has an elevator for wheelchair users.

Sumida Park.jpg② Sumida Park (11:20-11:30)
After Sensoji Temple, we move across the river to Sumida Park and enjoy the view of the Tokyo Skytree and Sumida River, with beautiful sights beyond. Sumida Park is also known as a cherry-blossom viewing spot where you can enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom, as well as being a scenic point for gazing at Tokyo Skytree.

IMG_4132.jpg③ Shibuya Crossing & Hachiko (13:30-13:45)
After Sumida Park, we have lunch in Asakusa then go to Shibuya by subway. In Shibuya, we’ll first experience the Shibuya scramble intersection, which is the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world. 3,000 people may cross on one green light at many times and 500,000 to 1 million people cross here in a single day. In Shibuya, we can take you to the observatory of Shibuya Sky as an option. In this case, an additional admission fee of 2,500 yen per person will be charged, if you want to visit there, please pay it including your guide's.

Harajuku Cat Street.jpg④ Harajuku Cat Street (14:00-14:25)
After crossing the scrambled intersection, we go to Meiji Dori, exit the Cat Street, and head towards Harajuku. Running in parallel with Meiji Dori, connecting Shibuya and Harajuku, Cat Street is a promenade built on the old Shibuya River, which was once flowing underneath. This is a perfect spot to feel state-of-the-scene Japanese youth culture.

Meiji Shrine.jpg⑤ Meiji Jingu Shrine (14:30-15:50)
After passing through Cat Street, we pass through Omotesando, heading on to Meiji Shrine. The Meiji Shrine is where the Emperor Meiji had built the cornerstones of modernization of Japan from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It is a sacred spot with a distinct quiet from the hustle and bustle of the surroundings. At the end of 2016, the approach to the main hall was paved for wheelchair accessibility, making it a perfect spot for us to go on this tour.

Subway.jpg⑥ Back to hotel (16:30)
After visiting Meiji Shrine, we return to your hotel and end the tour. Together with a guide that knows about Tokyo, we invite you to have a wonderful and carefree day.

Great Guides - they know accessibility

Not only was the guide friendly and knowledgeable about Tokyo, she was also understanding of different disabilities. She even had a certification as a personal carer! No need to worry.

Couldn't Be Beaten

Had three great day tours with Omakase, two in Tokyo and one in Osaka. While their advertised itineraries are great they are happy to change things to suit you. If you have some special interests like we did then discuss these with the company beforehand.

Our guides were fantastic, Sumiko was outstanding in her friendliness and knowledge, Hiro helped to get probably the first electric scooter access to the Tokyo Museum (they initially did not want us to use the Travel Scoot but an old manual wheelchair), and Hidio took us to some hidden places in Osaka where disabled travellers normally don't go.

The company manager, Takeshi, came with us on our first day trip, and with his help and Sumiko's great guidance we visited seven locations using the Tokyo metro, starting in the rush hour! Just a fantastic personal experience and the metro has certainly improved their disability access to the point where its better than most all other places we have travelled to.

Some fellow abled travellers only managed three location visits in the same amount of time, but of course they were in an air-conditioned coach.

Omakase really cares and we can't recommend them highly enough. Don't be put off if you have a disability and have heard stories about Japan being too difficult to visit. provided you get experts like Omakase to help you won't be disappointed.

It's fun in Tokyo!

On Monday July 24th I signed up for the Omakase no barrier tour of Tokyo which takes you to four of the most popular tourist sites of Tokyo. The details of which you can find on their website. Before the appointed time of 9:30 am their tour guide Yoko San, an English speaking, qualified tour guide and also a trained carer turned up at our hotel. After exchanging contact details with my wife we set off to Ginza station.
I am 76 years old and because of a large Chordoma tumour in my sacrum which was treated by Proton beam therapy in Hyogo, Japan in December 2014. I have limited mobility.
As my walking speed is slow and unable to walk long distances, I walked part of the way using my rollater/wheelchair and she pushed my 85kg much of the rest of the way. After buying our tickets for the Metro at the Ginza station.,she asked me sit on my wheelchair, while she arranged with the JR staff to help us board the train, by placing a board between the platform and the train so that she can wheel the wheelchair onto the train. The coach for handicapped stops exactly in front of the marking on the platform. TheJR staff also arranged for someone else with another board waiting at our destination station to help us off the train. This is possible because the handicap coaches stop at the precise position and all trains run on time. On another trip we had to change trains and the JR staff followed us from the first train to the second train. Then they arranged for another JR staff waiting at our final station to help us off the train. What an amazing service provided by JR!
Yoko San was very caring and offered to push me when I showed sign of being tired. She made sure I had lots of water, as it was a hot day and tried to keep us in the shade. For a small person she was amazingly strong, probably because she plays golf.
She was also very knowledgeable of the sites we visited and also took us into a few buildings to enable us to have good birds eye of the sites. She had with her notes and pictures explaining information of the sites. She also knew where the best toilets were.
The only thing I had asked to change was the menu for lunch, being from Malaysia they thought I was Muslim and booked lunch in a Halal restaurant. When I expressed my preference for Japanese food, Yoko immediately went out and came back with suggestions of 3 different types of Japanese restaurants. We went to the one I chose and had a great lunch. It is good that they take the trouble to arrange for Halal food but it would be worth while checking if the guest is Muslim or not.
The choice of sites to visit were excellent and we returned at our hotel nearly 45 minutes after the appointed time. So that my wife will not worry, Yoko called my wife to let her know we were running a little behind schedule.
I ended the day a tired and happy man. This is the first time since my treatment that I have done so much. It would not have been possible to have done it on my own, even with my wife.
Thank you Omakase tours ands special thank to Yoko San. I can strongly recommend Omakase no barrier tours to the handicapped. It would have been impossible for me to have seen and done so much even with a untrained helper. The cost charged for a one on one English speaking tour guide/trained helper is very reasonable indeed.

Such a great experience!

Hi highly recommend the Full-Day Accessible Barrier-Free Tokyo for Wheelchair Users Tour. We had such a wonderful experience! It was my dream to ride on the subway trains but I was too nervous to try it on my own. Our wonderful tour guide, Hitomi-San made it so easy and fun! She knew right where all the elevators were and how to navigate each train and station in my wheel chair. No problems on a Saturday having room for my chair on the train.

I loved each stop on the tour and Hitomi-San was very knowledgeable and gave us history and back ground of each place we visited. She was also very patient about the kind of shopping I wanted to do and helped me find the right kinds of stores.

Also she was a wonderful photographer and I will cherish the great photos she took of us at each location on the tour for the rest of my life.

So grateful!

I signed up for the one-day barrier-free tour because of leg problems which cause me to have pain if I walk far. I ordered as wheelchair as well as the tour.
Yoko-san, the guide, was fantastic. She wheeled me to the nearest metro station, and we set off on our tour. Without her, I would never have been able to travel around Tokyo, as the steps are too much for me. The Tokyo metro is amazing!
Yoko-San is a registered carer as well as an English-speaking guide. She took me to many fascinating places, a Buddhist shrine and a Shinto one, and other places too. I felt that I got a good overall idea of Tokyo. She explained all about the history of the places we visited, it was most interesting.
We went to a very nice cafe for lunch, where they cater to people like me who have food intolerances.
Yoko-san went to a lot of trouble to help me, and even took me to a convenience store near my apartment, so she could carry some heavy water bottles for me.
I was so happy with the tour and with my lovely guide! I will never forget the day.

One Day in Tokyo

Great Day. Our guide Yoshimi was great. Her English was really clear and she was able to relay a lot of information about the history and cultural aspects of Japan. As this was the only day we had a guide it was invaluable as it explained a lot of the other sites we saw in Kyoto and Hiroshema.
If your time in Tokyo is limited, I'd most definitely recommend this tour! It's a great way to fit in as many sights as possible, whereas I probably would have spent half my time trying to find my way out of the first train station.

Barrier-Free tour

I did not realize that the tour was going to be a one on one tour. I was expecting a bus tour that was wheelchair friendly. I really enjoyed the tour. Yoko went thru lots of trouble to make the trip successful. She was flexible so I did not feel rushed at any place and could take my time. She travelled by public transport so I got to see and experience the real Japan. Japan has got such amazing facilities for disabled people. We had a beautiful authentic Japanese lunch which was delicious. If you have problems walking I would highly recommend this tour..

Tokyo and wheelchair

Yoko was a lovely guide. She took the trouble to find out what my interests were and took me to see a Netsuke Exhibition and in to a beautiful garden. She seemed happy to push my wheelchair when the walks were long and crowded yet she was sensitive to my need to push the wheelchair myself sometimes, allowing me to have some exercise and independence to take photos. (Although my mobility is compromised poststroke, I am able to walk a bit.) In a Gallery she remembered to put the wheelchair front on to the exhibits, understanding that when we are side on we get a crick in our necks!
Yoko was a very nice person and good company.

Wheelchair Barrier Free Tour of Tokyo

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Shizuko. In addition to seeing the sights, we learned so much about the culture, traditions & history behind the sights. Shizuko’s explanations were clear & easy to understand. We got to enjoy Japanese “street food” & got some shopping in, as well. Shizuko took such care in guiding us safely through the crowds & made it fun for us, we never felt rushed. It was nice to have someone who knew where all the elevators were, which always is a challenge for a wheelchair. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Perfect day

We had a lovely day in Tokyo, guided by Yoshimi. She was very knowledgeable and very friendly. We could go everywhere, guided by her. Transportation was taken care of smoothly and she knew the best places to go to eat. This was a great way of getting to know Tokyo a bit better. And the best thing was that everything was barrier free.

More than we could have seen on our own!

We thoroughly enjoyed our full day tour with Shizuko. She gracefully guided us through Tokyo and shared tips, history and a true love of the city. We saw many more sites than we would have been able to see on our own and Shizuko also shared travel information for the remainder of our trip.

If you think you may be able to navigate the public transportation system of Tokyo but are wondering if you should book a guide, do yourself a favor and enjoy a visit with the help of Shizuko. It will be time we’ll spent. We would do it again in a heartbeat.

Delightful tour and guide

We had a wonderful day and tour. We visited Asakusa and the Sensoji Temple, Shibuya and Meiji Shrine. Had lunch in Asakusa and ice cream near the Meiji Shrine. Learned how to move around Tokyo in the rails. Shizuko was a delightful guide - a lot of fun and very informative. She was also a big help in getting me around. As a bonus, she also recommended that we visit the Edo Museum the next day and gave us directions on how to get there and back. It is a wonderful museum and we learned a lot. We also ate at the museum restaurant and then visited the Kyu Yasuda gardens and the Yokoamii-cho Park where there is a beautiful memorial to the 1923 earthquake victims. If we ever return to Tokyo, we will again plan to meet up with Shizuko.

First Day in Tokyo

First day in Tokyo Yoko demonstrated high level of professionalism in handling me in my wheelchair using Tokyo public transportation notorious for its complexity. Most importantly, she created an itinerary showing us wide range of Tokyo Places and neighborhoods. Yoko has a very attractive, warm, and friendly personality. Great first day in Tokyo!

Accessible tour

We booked an accessible tour as my wife suffered an unfortunate accident whilst on holiday and was wheelchair bound. We were met at our hotel by our guide Fumiko, a very caring and informative guide. I am sure she has done this particular highlights tour of Tokyo many times previously but she came across as it was her first time. She carefully guided us on the underground system ensuring guards were available with portable ramps to allow the wheelchair on the train at entering and exit. It was very hot and humid at the time of our visit but we made several stops for refreshment along the way. We went from the calm of strolling through beautiful park and shrines to the organised chaos of the famous Shibuya crossing.
All in all a most pleasurable experience and highly recommended for visitors who may have doubt about using a wheelchair on the busy streets of Tokyo

Tokyo highlights in one day

Yumi was so helpful explaining the culture and helping us through the crowded Asakusa area, our favorite experience. She is a wealth of knowledge about history and architecture, describing differences between the architecture of temples and shrines. She was flexible with our itinerary and knew the best ways to walk with the fewest steps when our legs were tired. We loved her!

Highly recommend Emiko!

My wife Francesca and I had a tour hosted by Emiko [Kaneko]. This was a successful day with pleasant conversation, interesting sight seeing a relaxed and comfortable lunch stop and informative commentary through out. We really got a 'slice of the city'. I would highly recommend Emiko. I'm addition she was able to adapt the arrangements to suit my wheelchair bound wife which pleased us greatly.
