Explore Hakone safely and easily with our wheelchair accessible tour!
If you fancy seeing more of Japan than the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, Hakone is a good day trip destination. It’s less than two hours from Tokyo and offers magnificent views of nature with Mt. Fuji as an ever-present backdrop. On this tour you can travel comfortably in a wheelchair-friendly car, then cruise across the waters of Lake Ashi, journey to the summit of Mt. Komagatake to see the ancient shrine Mototsumiya and immerse yourself in culture at the Hakone Open Air Museum. Your English speaking guide will help you relax and enjoy the area without worrying about any accessibility problems.
1. Pickup from your hotel in Tokyo and head to the Hakone area (8:00-10:00)
2. Hakone Shrine (10:00-10:30)
Make a short stop at Hakone Shrine to experience the atmosphere of a mystical old Japanese shrine from the Heian period. Lying at the foot of Mount Hakone along the shores of Lake Ashi, it is a peaceful place to start your tour. There are many stairs in front of the main shrine so your driver will take the car access road directly to the main temple.
3. Cruise across Lake Ashi (Motohakone-ko to Togendai-ko) (10:55-11:20 [10:45-11:10 from Dec 1-Mar 19])
Lake Ashi is a scenic lake formed over 3000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. It is famous for the red torii gates of Hakone Shrine and clear views of Mt. Fuji, both the real thing and its reflection on the lake. Take a 30 minute cruise across the lake on a pirate ship operated by Hakone Sightseeing Boats.
4. Hakone Ropeway and lunch (11:30-12:30) (*If Owakudani is closed due to volcanic activity, the ropeway will be skipped and an alternative will be available such as the Komagatake Ropeway)
First take the Hakone Ropeway from Togendai to Owakudani (16 minutes), then enjoy lunch with a view of the volcanic Owakudani at the Owakudani Station Dining Hall. Be sure to try the kuro-tamago (eggs cooked in the hot springs with blackened shells due to the sulfer).
5. Owakudani (12:30-13:00)
Owakudani is an ideal place for observing the heavy volcanic of the Hakone area. You can see the active sulfer vents from up close and if you're lucky with the weather you may be able to see an amazing view of Mt. Fuji!
6. The Hakone Open-Air Museum (*Pola Museum of Art if bad weather) (13:15-15:30)
Get picked up from Owakudani and driven to the Open-Air Museum. Founded in 1969, the Hakone Open-Air Museum aims to blend nature and art, making the most of the glorious natural beauty of the area. Located in a vast green garden with a view of the mountains, the museum has on permanent display some 120 masterpieces by famous modern and contemporary sculptors. The exhibits are designed so that you can immerse yourself in them and there are a multitude of displays both indoors and outdoors. Feel free to stop for a refresher at the museum café.
