Dive deep into the heart of Japan’s ancient national sport in a fully immersive Sumo Experience guided by real sumo professionals.
Get hands-on inside an actual sumo ring in Tokyo, led by elite instructors including former sumo wrestlers and national champions. This 2 to 3-hour experience is held indoors and designed for all ages, genders, and fitness levels.
There are two daily slots available: one starting at 9:00 AM and the other at 1:00 PM. The meeting point is the Amita Sumo Dojo.
Meet the Instructors :
Takeshi Amitani
Founder of Amita Sumo Dojo, Mr. Amitani is a former Junior High School Yokozuna and two-time US Sumo Open Champion. He has directed sumo scenes for Netflix’s Sanctuary and played Ryuchozan in the series. He also appeared as himself in Disney+’s Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t! and is known for his passionate commitment to spreading sumo culture internationally.
Masahiro Yamaguchi
Former professional sumo wrestler (rikishi) under the name Daikiho. His achievements include being High School Yokozuna, winning multiple national university tournaments, and rising to the top Makushita division after joining Miyagino-beya. After retiring in 2019, he continues to share his deep knowledge of sumo as a special staff member at Amita Sumo Dojo. He has appeared in Thermae Romae II, Sanctuary (Netflix), and Dekamori Hunter (TV Tokyo).
① Welcome, Mawashi Wrap-Up & Ring Preparation
Begin with a warm welcome, self-introductions, and a short quiz to test your sumo knowledge. Then, wear an authentic mawashi (sumo loincloth) with guidance, and help prepare the ring as real wrestlers do.
② Rules, Rituals & Basic Movements
Learn about sumo rules, etiquette, and sacred rituals, followed by core movements like shiko (foot stomps) and koshiwari (sumo squats).
③ Stretching, Footwork & Wall Drills
Prevent injuries with sumo-style stretching and warm-up, then practice suriashi (sliding steps) and teppo (wall-push techniques).
④ Battle Practice & Match Experience
Test your strength and form in mock battles, and experience a real torikumi (bout) with instruction on match flow, chirichozu gestures, and forbidden moves.
⑤ Commemorative Photos & Shower
End with a group photo session in the ring and freshen up with a quick shower (optional).

• Bring a towel and change of clothes
• Glasses must be removed (consider using contact lenses)
• Pants provided if needed
