A wheelchair friendly guided tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima.
Hiroshima is known for being the site where an atomic bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1945. Almost everything within a 2km radius of the bomb site was destroyed, causing great devastation to the city. Since the end of the war, much effort was put into rebuilding the city, while leaving many reminders in order not to forgot, like the surviving Atomic Bomb Dome. On the tour you will take a wheelchair friendly route around Hiroshima to view the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Park Memorial and Museum. The guide will allow you personal space to reflect, before escorting you on a barrier free route to Miyajima Island, where you’ll spend a lighter afternoon amongst the deer and famous red torii gate.
This tour is run using accessible public transportation, not with a private car. It is possible to conduct the tour using a private car upon request for an extra fee.
① Hotel pickup (9:00)
The guide will meet you in your hotel lobby and escort you to the first site.
② Atomic bomb dome (9:15-9:40)
The Atomic Bomb Dome is a symbol of peace for the city of Hiroshima. Used originally as a prefectural hall, the dome was blown up during the blast, killing everyone inside. However the structure of the dome remained and has been used as a symbol of the people’s wish for peace ever since, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Your guide will offer you history and explanations, while allowing you to reflect on the tragedy that occurred.
③ Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park (9:45-10:20)
Located next to the Dome, the Peace Memorial Park was once a busy commercial downtown area. These days it is a quiet green space, dedicated to remembering those we lost and our hope for a more peaceful future. The guide will help you traverse the park by wheelchair, providing history and explanations when you wish.
④ Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum (10:20-11:20)
The Memorial Museum will be a somber experience, where you will see belongings left by the victims of the bombing as well as heart-wrenching testimony by the survivors. View photos of the massive devastation at the time and learn about the military aspect of the attack. The guide will step back and allow you to process the exhibits in your own way.
⑤ Lunch (11:40-12:30)
Relax and decompress after the confronting mourning with some lunch.
⑥ Green Mover Tram #2 to Hiroden-Miyajimaguchi (12:30-13:30)
The guide will escort you on a wheelchair friendly tram to the ferry port.
⑦ Ferry to Miyajima (13:40-13:50)
Take a quick ferry to the island.
⑧ Itsukushima shrine and the red torii gates (14:00-14:50)
Known worldwide for its iconic floating torii gate, Itsukushima is the symbol of Miyajima Island. This is a beautiful, peaceful place where you can bask in the sun while enjoying the seaside views. The roaming deer that wander everywhere make this island quite unique too. After viewing the tori gate, move on to Itsukushima Shrine, following an accessible route throughout. The shrine consists of a prayer hall, a main hall and a noh theater stage, which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea.
⑨ Miyajima Daiganji Temple (14:50-15:10)
Daiganji Temple is dedicated to Benzaiten, the Goddess of eloquence, music, wisdom and wealth, and is known as one of the three most famous Benzaiten Temples in Japan.
⑩ Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street (15:15-15:45)
This old shopping street is filled with deer and many shops, restaurants and cafes. Wander at your own pace, stop for a snack or to buy some souvenirs.
⑪ Return by ferry/train to hotel (15:55-17:00)

・During the peak travel seasons of March, April, October, and Year-end and New Year holidays (from December 30 to January 3), please be aware that there will be an additional charge of 2,000 yen per person for the tour.
・Tour duration can be extended at a rate of 6,000 yen per group, per hour. During the peak months of March, April, and October, the rate is 8,000 yen per hour. Please be aware that the tour extension depends on the guide's availability and may not always be possible. Any additional charges for extended time will be invoiced online after the tour based on the actual duration of the extension.

Our day trip to Hiroshima was a great experience to do the private tour with Michi (Minami). She planned the itinerary such that we could avoid the long lines at the Itsukushima shrine in Miyajima, had a reserved table to experience Hiroshima style okonomiyaki, and made our way through some shopping - including suggestions for what to try (fried oysters, local beer, and yuzu soda).
Michi’s local expertise was excellent the way we navigated back to Hiroshima station after our visit to the Peace Memorial, along with some last minute shopping for the famous momiji manju not having to spend time finding the store, so that we could make it in time for our train back to Kyoto.

We had the most wonderful tour around Hiroshima: the Peace Memorial Museum, the Children’s Statue with the nearby colorful origami cranes symbolizing wishes for peace, the A-Dome, and Miyajima. Michi is a fantastic guide and made our tour today so special! She met us at our cruise ship and made recommendations of the best ways to arrange our day. We began with a fast ferry to Miyajima Idlamd in the morning so we could see the beautiful gate during high tide so it appears to be floating. Then we visited the shrine which was wonderful. After a great local-fare lunch we took the tram to Hiroshima where we saw the Peace Museum and more. Without Michi we absolutely could not have seen all we did today. She was incredibly kind and accommodating and her English is perfect! Highly recommend Michi!

An excellent day - the right balance
We had a great day with our guide Koji who showed us around Hiroshima and Miyajima island. We had a great lunch and Koji showed us all his favourite spots. Would recommend getting to the Hiroshima peace museum early as it was unfortunately very busy and we didn’t get to spend as much time as we would have liked there (no fault of Koji who tried to give us as much time as possible.) Would definitely recommend.
