Narai-juku 1-day Hike: Trekking in the Unexplored World

Step back in time and walk the historic Nakasendo, where Japan’s past comes alive.

Overview

The Nakasendo was a major highway that saw many travelers during the Edo period (1603-1868). On this tour, you will walk from Yabuhara-juku, a historic post town, to Narai-juku, crossing the Torii Pass along the way. The road has preserved the atmosphere of those who once journeyed through it, offering visitors a unique time-travel experience where the past and present meet.

The Kiso region is renowned for its traditional crafts, including Kiso lacquerware and lacquered combs. At Narai-juku, visitors can purchase these beautifully crafted items and immerse themselves in Japan's rich cultural heritage.

The final stop, Narai-juku, is one of the best-preserved post towns along the Nakasendo and offers a glimpse into Japan's past. Lined with traditional wooden buildings and merchant houses, Narai-juku retains its Edo-period charm, making it easy to imagine what life was like centuries ago. Known as "Narai of a Thousand Houses," the town stretches for a kilometre along the road, offering a beautiful setting for leisurely strolls. You can explore various shops, inns, and tea houses, as well as enjoy local delicacies.
